Warner Bros. announced the official titled for the upcoming fourth Matrix film during CinemaCon and it confirms a widely reported rumor.

The official title for the upcoming Matrix sequel is officially The Matrix Resurrections. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively, after dying at the end of the original trilogy. Plot details surrounding their grand return remain under wraps, but it has been widely assumed that the title Resurrections, which has long been rumored, hints at their reappearance. Lana Wachowski is returning to direct the upcoming sequel but this time she’s going it alone – the original trilogy was directed by Lana alongside her sister, Lilly Wachowski.

Jada Pinkett Smith will also return for The Matrix 4 as Niobe and she, Reeves, and Moss will be joined by a slew of fresh faces. Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, and Christina Ricci are all set to star. The film will debut in theaters and on HBO Max this December, 18 years after the trilogy concluded with The Matrix Revolutions. Despite the fact that many felt the final two films, Reloaded and Revolutions, didn’t hold up compared to the original film, anticipation for the sequel remains high.

Now, Warner Bros. has confirmed the official title as The Matrix Resurrections. They announced this alongside the debut of The Matrix 4’s first trailer, which has yet to be released to the public. The confirmation at CinemaCon comes after the rumored title was reported to be used during test screenings for the film.

As mentioned earlier, Resurrections certainly hints at the return of Neo and Trinity in the titular Matrix. It could go beyond that, though. While the first trailer for The Matrix 4 that debuted at CinemaCon showed the pair alive again in the simulation, it seems plausible that, somehow, they could once again join the fight against the machines in the real world. Neo is a christ like figure in the original trilogy and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him rise once again to fight against the machines like he did before.

Resurrections could also hint at the return of the Agents. Although Neo may have defeated Hugo Weaving’s black suited Agent Smith in the original films, the first look at the new movie showed them back in full force. Unfortunately, Weaving isn’t returning and it’s unclear who amongst the new cast is playing the Agents, but it certainly sounds like they’re being resurrected, too. With a few short months until The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters, audiences can expect the recently revealed trailer to debut for the general public in the next month or two, giving a glimpse at what’s in store for the highly anticipated film.
