The Space Jam 2 official title and logo are revealed by LeBron James. After years of rumors, a followup to the beloved 1996 live-action/animation hybrid is finally coming through the pipeline, as Space Jam 2 is set to come out in July 2021 (nearly 25 years after the original). James is serving as producer and star, headlining a human cast that also includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Don Cheadle, and several of today’s biggest basketball stars (the film will, of course, also feature the Looney Tunes). Production commenced last summer, during the NBA offseason.

Ever since then, all’s been quiet on the Space Jam 2 front, and it still remains on track for its scheduled release date despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (which has already caused changes to the movie calendar beyond this year). As fans wait to see if the project will be impacted by the health crisis, James himself broke some big news that’s sure to excite viewers.

On his official Instagram account, James shared a short video of himself wearing a Space Jam 2 cap. The hat not only reveals the movie’s official logo, but also confirms that the film’s called Space Jam: A New Legacy. Check out James’ post in the space below:

James has already revealed his Space Jam movie is a reboot, rather than a direct sequel to the ’96 original. By that logic, the A New Legacy subtitle makes sense. Obviously, the film maintains the classic Space Jam branding audiences are familiar with, but the full title communicates this is a fresh beginning for the franchise. James and his business partner Maverick Carter are hoping Space Jam: A New Legacy is successful enough to spawn followups, so the idea here is to draw in a new generation of viewers with a fresh take. Still, it’ll be interesting to see if A New Legacy has any allusions to the 1996 Space Jam (the creative team hopes Michael Jordan takes a role) or if it really is a hard relaunch that acts as the first installment in a new continuity.

Learning this information at a time when James was supposed to be leading his Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 NBA Playoffs is a painful reminder of live sports’ absence during the pandemic, but it’s still a thrill. Space Jam fans have waited a long, long time for a new film, and it’s great to see one actually come into fruition and be ready to hit theaters soon. Again, there’s the possibility Space Jam: A New Legacy is delayed as studios sort out their slates following the COVID-19 crisis, but the film is on its way and will hopefully entertain moviegoers in the not-too-distant future.
