Charlie Cox says his version of Daredevil from Netflix won’t make an appearance in Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3. After the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe grew substantially with the release of The Avengers, Marvel and Netflix partnered up to bring more Marvel content to the popular streaming service. The first show from the agreement was Daredevil, which introduced audiences to Cox as Matt Murdock. Thanks to the more adult tone of the show, Cox’s performance immediately stood out and left Marvel fans asking for a crossover with the movies.

Despite Daredevil running for three seasons and the character appearing in The Defenders, that crossover never came and Cox’s time as Daredevil seemingly ended with the cancelation of the series. But, fans have held out hope that Marvel Studios will revive the series when they are legally allowed to do so or that Cox will reprise his superhero role in an MCU movie. The hope for such a role only grew after it became a popular theory that Daredevil could appear in Spider-Man 3. Daredevil could help Peter Parker after Spider-Man: Far From Home ended with him being outed as Spider-Man and framed for murdering Mysterio.

During a recent interview with ComicBook, though, Cox shut down the rumors that this will happen with his Daredevil. Although the rumors of such an appearance never came from reliable sources, Spider-Man 3 became the perfect place in the minds of fans for Daredevil to return. But, Cox confirms that he’s had no discussions about such a return and that if Daredevil is appearing in the next Spider-Man film, he won’t be the one in the suit. Cox said:

I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it,. If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.

The idea of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Cox’s Daredevil sharing the screen is one that fans have had for years, with even the actors involved expressing interest in the crossover. However, the legal complications between Netflix and Marvel, as well as the timing required to pull off a crossover, kept it from happening. As of this writing, Marvel Studios cannot even legally begin developing plans for Daredevil, as they must wait two years from the cancelation announcement. That’s why Daredevil appearing in Spider-Man 3 has always appeared unlikely.

With Cox now ruling out the chance of his Daredevil appearing in Spider-Man 3, it remains to be seen what Marvel Studios’ plans are for the character and casting. Although Cox’s portrayal of Daredevil is beloved by viewers, Marvel Studios might want a fresh start with a big-screen version of the character. After all, having Cox return as Daredevil would make the Netflix/Marvel shows an official part of MCU canon, which could be complicated to explain. Cox is unsurprisingly open to returning to the role though and it would be great to see him in the red suit again alongside other Marvel heroes – but Spider-Man 3 will not be where that happens (if it ever does).
