Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds team up in new photos from the movie Red Notice. An original action-comedy, the upcoming project reunites Johnson with writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber following their previous collaborations on the films Central Intelligence and Skyscraper. Plot-wise, Red Notice follows The Rock’s character, an Interpol agent and master tracker, as he hunts the world’s greatest art thief (Gal Gadot) with the assistance of the world’s most notorious con man (Reynolds). Johnson’s worked with both of his costars before on the Fast & Furious movies, including last year’s Hobbs & Shaw.
Like so many other movies, Red Notice was forced to shut-down production in March over concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. The film’s been in a holding pattern since then and there’s no word yet on when cameras will begin rolling again. In the meantime, Reynolds and Johnson have kept busy by hosting online Q&As and building hype for their upcoming movies – Red Notice included – through their social media platforms.
In a recent Instagram post, Reynolds wished Johnson a happy birthday and unveils a fresh pair of Red Notice photos to mark the occasion. You can check them out below, along with Reynolds’ original message.
A Netflix Original, Red Notice is part of the streamer’s ongoing efforts to deliver exclusive content that can compete with the tentpoles studios are currently churning out for theaters. They only just scored another hit on that front with Extraction, a Russo Brothers-produced Chris Hemsworth action-thriller that’s projected to become their biggest film premiere ever. Of course, it’s anyone’s guess how the movie would’ve performed if theaters weren’t closed down right now because of the pandemic. Still, Originals like Extraction and Michael Bay’s 6 Underground (which also starred Reynolds) have proven there’s a demand for blockbuster entertainment among the streamer’s users, even when the quality is – arguably – lacking. That bodes well for Red Notice, which is hoping to make a splash when it begins streaming, most likely in 2021.
On that note: as with every other movie-on-hold, it’s still unclear when filming on Red Notice will pick back up. The Rock is hoping to begin shooting DC’s Black Adam towards the end of summer, but that may depend on when Thurber is able to get things going again on his Netflix movie. Reynolds is similarly planning to get to work on a new time-travel film with his Free Guy director Shawn Levy near the very end of the year, so the pair will have to move quickly between projects after Red Notice wraps. But after being stuck at home self-quarantining for so long, they’ll probably be more than happy to dive head-first back into their jobs.
