Warner Bros. changes The Flash movie release date, moving it forward one month to June 2022 from its previous date in July 2022. Ever since Ezra Miller was cast as Barry Allen aka The Flash, fans have clamored for a solo movie starring this iteration of the Scarlet Speedster. And though a movie set in Warner Bros. and DC Films’ DC Extended Universe continuity has been in the works for many years, it’s had a number of setbacks, including multiple directors signing on, then exiting.

The Flash movie seemed to finally be moving forward when director Andy Muschietti (IT) signed on to helm the project. Then, Warner Bros. gave The Flash a release date in summer 2022. More recently, Miller was at the center of a scandal that had some folks wondering whether the studio would continue developing the DC movie with him as the star. However, it seems The Flash is staying on course and will even release earlier than previously expected.

Warner Bros. announced multiple changes to their upcoming release slate today, including a few DC movies. While both The Batman release date and Shazam 2 release have been delayed, The Flash moves up one month to June 3, 2022, from July 1, 2022.

Though not explicitly stated by Warner Bros., these release date changes come as a result of the widespread production shutdowns in Hollywood. Studios across the industry paused ongoing and in development projects to adhere to social distancing orders that combat the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. As a result, many movies have been delayed, either to later release dates or indefinitely, as studios shuffle their release calendars. For instance, Disney recently announced all their upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies were delayed, but the interconnected franchise is much more beholden to release order than Warner Bros’ DC slate.

In the case of The Flash, it shows confidence in the studio’s ability to move forward with the project once the social distancing measures are lifted and work can resume. Since certain aspects of The Flash movie pre-production can be completed while folks are working from home, like refining the script, hopefully the project can jump into filming quickly. The release date change also seems to indicate the incident Miller was involved in that went viral won’t affect his standing as The Flash. The DC movie has long been built around his version of Barry Allen, so it’s not entirely surprising the studio would want to continue with his Flash film.

Little is known about Warner Bros. and Muschietti’s Flash movie, but with a June 2022 release date and pre-production likely to start as soon as possible, fans of DC’s Scarlet Speedster may learn more about the project soon enough. If nothing else, The Flash movie being moved forward is one bright spot of hope in amidst all the other major delays.
