A new piece of fan art has been making the rounds that gives Captain America, the beloved Marvel superhero, a Batman v Superman style makeover. Captain America was last seen in the box office juggernaut Avengers: Endgame where the character was given his swan song and passed on the iconic shield to Falcon as the Infinity Saga finally drew to a close. Avengers: Endgame ended up pulling in a massive $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War and Avatar, the film that had worn the box office crown for a decade.

Captain America made his debut in Marvel comics in 1941 from writers Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Though there are different, even darker origin stories for Captain America, the original story followed Steve Rogers, an army enlistee who was continuously rejected by the organization’s recruiters due to his small size. Rogers volunteered to be injected with a revolutionary serum which successfully gave him newfound strength and agility, essentially becoming a super soldier in the process. The character would end up wearing red, white and blue, the colors of the American flag, in addition to wielding a star-spangled shield, as he fought the nation’s most volatile enemies. Captain America’s most infamous enemies would include Red Skull, The Winter Soldier, Baron Zemo, Baron Von Strucker, Crossbones, and of course HYDRA, the evil organization that was a constant threat to the safety and security of the nation.

This new piece of fan art by Instagram user MUZE depicts the beloved hero donning a type of armor akin to Ben Affleck’s Batman in Batman v Superman. The armor is bulkier and heavily fortified, decorated in the character’s usual red, white and blue aesthetic and encompassed in a silver metal that appears to make up the vast majority of the new suit. There are notable enhancements to his hands and helmet, both seeming to be larger and more resilient, suited for both offensive and defensive blows. There are certainly comparisons that could be made to the armor War Machine uses as well, showcasing similarities in structure and appearance to the armor Tony Stark designs for that particular suit.

While it’s certainly intriguing to see how Captain America would look in an armor of this style and magnitude, it unfortunately doesn’t seem like it would be a practical choice for the super soldier to use in battle. Though, this suit is a far better alternative to the character’s Nomad suit from the 1970s which was a haunting misfire. The character already has super strength and incredible speed and agility, assets that make him a formidable threat outside of this heavily armored suit. It seems likely that a suit of this weight and bulk would only slow him down, making him an easier target for enemies to catch and prey on. However, the design is not only aesthetically impressive, but against a foe like Thanos or someone similar to his strength and size, could prove useful when going blow for blow.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Cap didn’t receive a new suit but rather a new shield courtesy of Wakanda. Unused concept art for the shield includes some Black Panther influences, but the final design used in the movie is far more plain. Regardless, whether inside a mechanized suit or out of one, Captain America is an intimidating opponent to go toe to toe with any day of the week.
